Age spots on face

age spots on faceOf the common imperfections that afflict facial skin, none are as aggravating as age spots on face. These spots, ranging from brownish to grayish splotches, are mementos of those carefree, sun-soaked activities of years past. To add insult to injury, these age spots are also reminders that human skin, facial skin specially, is an ageist indicator as spots usually show up on 40-ish faces. Also called liver spots or solar lentigenes, age spots on face are most often caused by extended and chronic exposure to the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. Frequent use of tanning lamps and tanning beds compound sun-induced dermal damage. UV light hastens melanin production on the epidermis, the topmost layer of the skin, producing an attractive tan that effectively protects deeper skin layers from UV damage. However, high concentrations of melanin tend to clump together, leading to age spots on the face and other sun-exposed skin. Genetics, hormonal imbalance, medication and exposure to certain environmental contaminants contribute to the likelihood of developing age spots.

Age spots on face are harmless and do not usually require medical attention other than for aesthetic reasons. Nevertheless, it is prudent to consult a doctor for any spots that are irregularly- shaped or that have changed drastically very quickly.

Many age spot remedies are formulated to treat, cover-up or do both in tandem. Creams, lotions, masks and peels
containing hydroquinone, glycolic acid, deoxyarbutin, kojic acid and other bleaching ingredients are available in non-prescription and prescription strengths. For those who desire noticeable results immediately, lunch-hour procedures like microdermabrasion, laser and intense pulse light treatments are popular.

But the best treatment for age spots on the face is still prevention. Avoid sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when the sun’s rays are most intense. Apply ample sunscreen with UVA and UVB protection half an hour before venturing outdoors. Cover up with a wide-brimmed hat to protect the face and neck. Furthermore, good nutrition and adequate hydration are equally important in maintaining healthy skin. With preventative and restorative measures widely available, blemish-free facial skin, especially one that is free of age spots, is achievable for everyone.
